Today’s classic is a romantic drama titled The Strange Woman. Starring Hedy Lamarr, George Sanders, and Louis Hayward, this film is an intriguing tale of love, lust and deception.
The movie is based on the novel by Ben Ames Williams and was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer.
Set in a small town in Maine during the mid-19th century, the Strange Woman follows Jenny Hager (played by Hedy Lamarr), the daughter of a drunken lumber mill owner who uses her beauty to manipulate men.
She sets her sights on wealthy timber baron Isaiah Poster (played by George Sanders) despite already being married to his best friend Ephraim Poster (played by Louis Hayward).
She can always get what she wants from the men in the 1820’s port of Bangor, Maine.
Freed by his death from her drunkard father she soon maneuvers herself into a position to marry a middle-aged monied local businessman.
Though she often uses his money to do good, she continues to consider all other men fair game. As their steamy affair develops, Jenny becomes more ruthless in her pursuit of wealth and power.
